NHS Guide on 10 ways to reduce pain
Whether your pain has just come on or you’ve lived with it for years, these tried-and-tested self-help steps can bring you relief.
ESCAPE-pain Online is freely available to anyone but is aimed specifically at people who have knee or hip osteoarthritis. It was designed to support people who have attended the face-to-face ESCAPE-pain programme to continue to exercise after the programme has ended. We have also found that it is useful for people who don’t live near a face-to-face class.
ESCAPE-pain Online provide users with a structured education and exercise programme of 12 sessions over six weeks. There are two compulsory sessions per week and they are a combination of education and exercise.
Education – watch engaging animations and education videos to learn to manage your condition better.
Exercise – choose between 16 high quality exercise videos to improve your joint pain.
The programme requires you to record your progress and repetitions which you are prompted to do with clear and simple guidance. Some exercises will ask you to record how many you completed in the allocated time, while others will ask you to just confirm if you completed the exercise or not.
Action on Pain is run entirely by volunteers who either have chronic pain or are affected by it in one way or another. AOP promotes the positive side of living with chronic pain through its range of publications and the information it provides via the website. Our Mobile Information Unit provides a valuable service enabling AOP to meet people affected by chronic pain on a face-to face basis with the facility to provide a confidential environment if required.
Painline is open between 1000-1600hrs Monday to Friday with an answerphone out of hours on 01553 828926 which may be free to some callers depending on who provides your telephone service. As we rely on volunteers there may be a time when you get the answerphone during our “open” hours. Please leave a message as we always get back to you.

The mission remains the same: to assist you and your loved ones in your efforts to effectively manage pain, reduce it’s impact, promote understanding, foster openness, enhance your well-being, and help get you back on track so you can live as healthfully and peacefully as possible.
My Live Well with Pain has been created by a group of clinicians who specialise in working with people with persistent pain.
After many years of working with people with pain, they have recognised that one of the keys to living well with pain is self-management.
When people self-manage their pain, their quality of life improves. Eventually it stops dominating their day and they begin to get more out of life. Managing your pain is not automatic – but it is something that can be learnt. That’s where this website comes in.
My Live Well with Pain is a collection of resources that are designed to help you learn the skills you need to become an effective self-manager of your pain. They are full of tried and tested ideas and methods – many suggested by people who are themselves living well despite their pain.
By using the resources in this website – and with support from your GP or pain specialist – you will be able to learn how to do this too. They aren’t an instant fix.
